Constitution Week marks a period during which citizens commemorate the signing of the Constitution of the United States. On September 17, 1787, the final draft of the Constitution of the United States was signed. This important document in American history established our national government, fundamental laws and has also guaranteed and protected certain basic rights for citizens.

The aims of the Constitution Week celebration are to:

  • – Encourage the study of the historical events leading to the framing of the Constitution.
  • – Emphasize the responsibility each citizen has for protecting and defending the Constitution.
  • – Inform people that the Constitution is the basis for America’s great heritage and the foundation for our way of life.

While the inception of Constitution week came into effect in September 2002, under the auspices of President George W. Bush, Constitution Day was officially enacted on August 2, 1956, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower following a congressional resolution petitioned by the Daughters of American Revolution. Constitution week has since been celebrated annually and runs from September 17-23.
